Type of Place

Type of Place is a multimedia project that documents daily life inside the independent mom and pop shops, social clubs, and other community spaces that are vanishing from the streets of New York.

The project details the struggles of independent owners operating in a city with few protections for small businesses and dwindling customers. Those struggles have been magnified by the current pandemic, leaving the fate of these safe havens and their community members more uncertain than ever.

Weaving together audio interviews, digital photography, and film photography, Type of Place aims to highlight the value that small spaces bring to local communities, and to preserve any remaining fragments of the city’s cultural fabric before they disappear altogether.
